First, decide what needs immediate attention.
Uncontrolled water, wastewater entering living areas, and water near electrical equipment need prompt attention. A contained drip may be suitable for a scheduled appointment, but the situation changes if water begins spreading.
If you smell gas
Leave the building immediately. Avoid switches, flames, appliances, and phones inside. From outside at a safe distance, call 911 or your gas utility. Do not return until the appropriate responders say it is safe.
For an active water leak
Close a fixture supply or the main water shutoff only if safely accessible. Do not enter standing water or approach wet electrical equipment to reach a valve. Keep away from sagging ceilings. Call with the location of the leak and whether the water has been stopped.
For sewage or multiple drain backups
Stop using water throughout the property if several drains are affected. Keep people and pets away from wastewater. Do not add drain chemicals. Tell the plumber which fixtures backed up and whether the problem has happened before.
