Start with the pattern.
One slow sink may indicate a problem close to that fixture. Several drains backing up, especially at lower fixtures, can indicate an issue in a shared line. These are clues to report, not a diagnosis.
Stop adding water to an active backup.
Avoid running the dishwasher, washing machine, showers, and other fixtures if several drains are backing up. Added water can make an overflow worse.
Avoid mixing drain products.
Do not add another chemical product to a blocked drain. Tell the plumber which cleaners, if any, were used so they can account for them when working.
Investigate recurring problems.
A drain that blocks again soon after clearing deserves further assessment. Ask whether a camera inspection would help establish pipe condition and identify a repeat obstruction.
