Put safety before belongings.
Keep away from water near electrical equipment and do not stand beneath a sagging ceiling. If there is a gas smell or immediate danger, leave and contact the appropriate emergency service.
Limit the supply only if it is safe.
If the source is a fixture and the supply valve is easy to reach, closing it may stop additional water. A main shutoff may be needed for another pipe leak. Do not force a stuck valve or enter standing water to reach one.
Capture useful information.
Once safely away from the affected area, note where the leak appeared and when. Tell the plumber whether the water supply is off, whether the leak continues, and whether nearby rooms are affected.
Separate repair from restoration.
Stopping the source and replacing damaged plumbing are different from extracting water, drying materials, and repairing walls or floors. Ask what the plumbing visit includes and arrange any additional restoration needed.
