Estimate shower water use
Use the flow rate listed on your showerhead or a reliable measured rate. Enter the total number of showers across the household each day and the average time per shower. This estimates showers only, not toilets, appliances, irrigation, or the complete water bill.
How the calculation works
Daily gallons = flow in gallons per minute × minutes per shower × household showers per day. Annual gallons = daily gallons × 365. For example, 2 gallons per minute × 8 minutes × 2 showers is 32 gallons per day, or 11,680 gallons per year. Those example inputs are not a measurement of your home.
Understand your bill before estimating savings
Water bills may include fixed charges, usage tiers, and sewer charges. A reduction in gallons does not reduce every part of the bill. Use your provider’s current rate schedule and our water savings calculator to explore a specific fixture change.
When increased use needs investigation
If a usage change cannot be explained by your routine, irrigation, or billing period, investigate visible running fixtures and ask about leak detection.
